Application of the MTM method for analysis and evaluation of complex work processes in production.


Background: A manufacturing company in the automotive industry faced the challenge of enhancing the efficiency of its production processes. Complex workflows, variable working hours, and alack of standardisation led to difficulties in planning and optimising work schedules.

Analysis: IPIC Austria was commissioned to analyse the work processes using the MTM method (Methods-Time Measurement). The goal was to record the duration of individual work steps precisely, identify possible improvements, and establish an objective basis for assessing work performance.

Actions:

1. Application of the MTM method: IPIC Austria used the MTM method to analyse each individual work step and determine the time required for completion precisely.

2. Standardisation of work processes: Based on the MTM analysis, uniform standards for work processes were developed to minimise variations in the times needed.

3. Training and involvement of employees: Employees were trained in the new standardised work procedures and actively involved in the optimisation process, leveraging their expertise and experience.

4. Implementation of feed-back mechanisms: A continuous feedback mechanism was established to make ongoing improvements and to make swift responses to changing requirements possible.

Results:

By applying the MTM method and the measures derived from it, ABC Produktions GmbH achieved impressive results:

1. More precise process times: Accurate recording of process times allowed for more precise planning and optimisation of production processes.

2. Increased efficiency: Standardisation of work processes led to a significant increase in efficiency, by minimising unnecessary variations and delays.

3. Verbesserte Mitarbeiterzufriedenheit: Involving employees in the optimisation process contributed to improve working conditions and increase employee satisfaction.

4. Improved employee satisfaction: Thanks to more precise planning and increased efficiency, ABC Produktions GmbH was able to reduce costs and strengthen its competitiveness.
